Quiz Resurrection

I made these three quizzes way back in 2002 and 2003, previously hosted in my various other domains and sites. The Lord of the Rings one was particularly popular and was responsible for making one of my domains gain a lot of hits as well as “blog authority.”

These web tests are now available again at my newly-reacquired domain, Xirculo.com, in the Quiz page: Which Lord of the Rings Elf Are You?, Which Fushigi Yuugi Seishi Are You? and Are You A Pervy Obi-Wan Kenobi Fancier?.

Below are my own results and what-not to the aforementioned quizzes:

I am Elrond!
I am Elrond, Lord of Rivendell. I chose Elvenkind over Humanity and was gifted with great wisdom. During the War of the Ring, I called a Council of the free peoples of Middle Earth and founded the Fellowship of the Ring, all the time wearing a tiara. In the movie, I’m played by Hugo Weaving.

Birthday of the Sith

Belated happy, happy, happy birthday, Papa!

I know I am four days late in stating this greeting in my journal, but, as the saying goes: “Mas vale tarde que nunca!”

My father celebrated the above-mentioned occasion on May 18th, the same day I caught the simultaneous worldwide premier of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

I was able to forage a couple of tickets and thus caught the screening with my friend Bob.

Before going up to the 10:00 PM show at SM City Cinema 5, we had dinner at the newly opened Rai Rai Ken, a Japanese (obviously) restaurant. Our fare consisted of chicken teriyaki on rice, mushroom and rich sauce on noodles, and bottomless iced tea.

Star Wars Episode 3 - Revenge of the SithRevenge of the Sith is my favorite among the three prequels, mainly because it is very dark and has a more adult and less teenybopper approach to storytelling, compared to the long political hullabaloo that was Episode I: The Phantom Menace and the rather mushy Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

As usual, I loved Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Christopher Lee as Count Dooku, although the latter had such a short role in the film.

Jimmy Smits was very debonair and dignified as Senator Bail Organa, while Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine had such delightful villainous command of all his scenes.

However, Master Yoda undoubtedly, literally rocked the house with his supreme lightsaber and martial arts skills.

Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker looked sexier with long hair but, sadly, he did little to appear more menacing as he succumbs to the Dark Side of the Force. His anger, fear and possessiveness could have been more palpable onscreen than it was portrayed.

I was very disappointed with the role of Natalie Portman as Senator Padme Amidala. All throughout the movie, she could be seen lounging around in a variety of highly stylized maternity dresses and crying over whatever it is Anakin decides to do, is doing or has done.

I missed the outspoken, powerful Naboo Queen-turned-Senator, who could enthrall the entire Galactic Senate with her courage and eloquence. Amidala was reduced to a necessary plot device, that is, the final push that would turn her husband into Darth Vader.

Nonetheless, I so had the chills when Anakin donned his costume and mask as Darth Vader for the first time. It was a little like communing with the Force.

Finally, after the long wait, the saga has come full circle.

Attack of the Clones

Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the ClonesI was able to watch Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones on its first day in Iloilo City theatres.

In fact, I just got home from watching it at SM City. I had a movie dinner, one of my favorite indulgences of late.

The movie did not disappoint. It had solid characters and good plot flow, with some of the most stunning computer-generated effects that I have ever come across on the silver screen.

I particularly loved the new pixel incarnation of Jedi Master Yoda, who could very well take on Jet Li, Neo, Spider-Man or anyone out there who could do the Matrix-like mid-air stunts. The movie likewise gave the Jedi Order the recognition it deserves. If the Jedi Knights do exist, I would very much like to join them, especially if I get awesome teachers like Yoda, Mace Windu, and, of course, Obi-wan Kenobi.

Hayden Christensen was a very good choice for the future Darth Vader. He has the right innate pagnanasa for it. The look in his eyes moments after his mother Shmi died in his arms was already a foreshadowing of darker things to come.

Ewan McGregor‘s Obi-wan Kenobi, whom I expected to burst into song anytime, was my favorite character. He had the right gruffness, the tempered power and wisdom, of a paternal mentor figure. Samuel L. Jackson‘s Mace Windu also had the charisma to take over the scene and radiate leadership and strength.

Clones was a good prequel, and one could already spot some aspects that would soon take bigger roles in the Star Wars saga. Among these are the rise to power of the then-Chancellor Palpatine, the formation of the Stormtrooper Army, the growing vengeance of the young Boba Fett, and the early designs of the Death Star ship, among many others.

The one thing I personally found most amusing about the whole movie was the presence of Christopher Lee, who played the Separatist/Federation leader Count Dooku. It is very well known that he also played the traitorous Saruman in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. His dialogue with the captive Obi-wan in Clones and the defeated Gandalf in Fellowship of the Ring went along similar lines.

It sort of goes like this: “Join me, Obi-wan (Gandalf), and together we will destroy the Sith (rule Middle Earth).”

In both instances his invitation was refused, too.

Here is the movie summary from Amazon.com:

If The Phantom Menace was the setup, then Attack of the Clones is the plot-progressing payoff, and devoted Star Wars fans are sure to be enthralled.

Ten years after Episode I, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), now a senator, resists the creation of a Republic Army to combat an evil separatist movement. The brooding Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is resentful of his stern Jedi mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), tormented by personal loss, and showing his emerging “dark side” while protecting his new love, Amidala, from would-be assassins.

Youthful romance and solemn portent foreshadow the events of the original Star Wars as Count Dooku (a.k.a. Darth Tyranus, played by Christopher Lee) forges an alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Fantasy Boys

Hayden Christensen as Anakin SkywalkerI watched The Fellowship of the Ring for the second time at SM City Cinema between classes yesterday.

Between shows, I was able catch the trailer of Star Wars Episode II: The Attack of the Clones. It was not very lengthy but the sequences were quite intense, in terms of both fights between Jedi and Sith and the developing relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala.

The actor playing Anakin Skywalker was just stunning in the sequences where he appeared in the preview. He also had this dangerous, bomb-waiting-to-explode aura about him that we all know would lead up to his transformation as the fearsome Darth Vader.

I thought at first Anakin was being portrayed by Sean Biggerstaff, who plays Oliver Wood in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The actor, however, turned out to be a relative unknown, Hayden Christensen. He is a Canadian actor who has appeared in some critically-acclaimed performances on television. Well, he is certainly appealing and menacing, from what I saw.

Fantasy movies do have the most good-looking guys, maybe that is why they are called that.
