The Cutting Edge
Several weeks ago, I was browsing through the shelves of the video store at the mall when I came across a VCD of The Cutting Edge.
This movie was released in 1992, in conjunction with the Winter Olympics back then.
The Cutting Edge is a love story, with pairs figure skating as the backdrop. The movie stars D.B. Sweeney as Douglas Dorsey and Moira Kelly as Kate Mosely.
Doug is a former ice hockey star player who was injured in his Olympic debut. He now has a blind side which prevents him from taking a shot at his professional dreams.
Kate is an Olympic-level pairs figure skater whose bitchy attitude drives partner after partner away.
In a last-ditch effort of Kate’s coach, Anton Pamchenco (Roy Dotrice), to find his charge a partner before the USA National Championships (and, eventually, the 1992 Winter Olympics), he convinces Doug to try his hand – or feet – at figure skating.
Doug is not dissuaded by Kate’s behavior and he successfully stays on as her partner. Together, they endure the trials of life and the competitive sport, their ties getting stronger, in the ultimate “love-skate” relationship.
I first saw this movie almost ten years ago, but when I saw it again, the magic was still there.
